Leon Wobschall: The highs and lows of promotion run-in for Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday

HERE'S a scenario. Possibly, unlikely, but you never know.
Hoping for a positive Tuesday night.Hoping for a positive Tuesday night.

Presuming Huddersfield Town, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday triumph this evening and Brighton lose, the Yorkshire trio will be three, four and seven points behind Albion respectively with plenty of time left until May.

Before we get too excited, Town must beat an Aston Villa side who are rediscovering what it feels like to win again, while Leeds face a very able Fulham team who are waiting to pounce if anyone above them slips up in their play-off pitch.

The Owls tackle a dogged and disciplined Burton, who have proved not to be in the business of handing out free lunches this term. And Brighton visit a Rotherham United side who have lost eight of their last nine matches.

But strange things can happen in the Championship. Bristol City, who cannot buy a win at present, were 2-0 up at Newcastle recently, while Nottingham Forest walloped Brighton. And hands up who thought that Blackburn Rovers would do the double over the Magpies?

Yet even if - and it is a big if - all of tonight’s results stack up for Yorkshire, it would pay not to get too giddy.

Perhaps the only thing to be certain about this evening is if Newcastle win at Reading, then transport companies in Tyneside better make sure that their open-top buses are spick and span in time for May.

You don’t win 13 away games by this stage of the season and not go up. Should the Magpies win tonight, the only pertinent issue is whether Rafa Benitez’s side breach 100 points.

For Brighton, Town, Leeds and the Owls, they would be well served not to metaphorically pop the champagne corks if they win or drown their sorrows for too long if they lose in games over the coming weeks. There’ll be plenty of time for that come the end of the long, hard slog.

Perhaps it is only after the Easter period next month when the picture will be clearer and, until then, it is about gathering points and not league positions.

Plenty can still happen and invariably will. As for March, it is a time for plugging away for most and keeping your powder dry. Apply a bit of psychological pressure on others, if needs be but, above all, stay on message yourselves.
