Leyton Orient 4 Sheffield Wednesday 0: Irvine blasts Owls defenders

ALAN IRVINE will be looking for a positive response from his side when Sheffield Wednesday look to get their promotion push back on track against Yeovil tomorrow night.

The Owls are now five points off the play-off places after they were demolished by a four-goal second-half blast at Leyton Orient.

A penalty by Ben Chorley started the rout and further goals from Harry Kane, Alex Revell and Paul-Jose M'Poku sunk the Owls.

An unhappy Owls manager said afterwards: "The players know my thoughts. Our defending was awful in the second half, especially from set-pieces."

The visitors had looked the better side before the break, but the game turned six minutes into the second half when Chorley put Orient ahead from the spot after Gary Teale had handled Revell's downward header.

"It was a little harsh. I don't think he tried to handle it, it bounced up and hit him," said Irvine. "But from there you have to make sure you don't crumble. At half-time I felt we were very much in the game. We had a couple of good chances, we put a lot of crosses in the box, but we didn't score."

Irvine was forced to make two changes at the break as debutant Gary Madine and Lewis Buxton came off with injuries.

"That shouldn't have had that kind of effect, because we have good players in our squad," said Irvine. "It was disappointing to lose Gary Madine because I thought he and Clinton Morrison were linking up well. But he was feeling dizzy from a bang he got on the head. While Lewis felt his hamstring and we couldn't take a risk."

One crumb of comfort for the Wednesday boss is that he expects Madine to be fit for tomorrow's home game against Yeovil.
