Liverpool reeling as Reading go through

Reading produced a stunning FA Cup third-round replay victory at Anfield as Liverpool's calamitous season went from bad to worse.

Liverpool had led through a first-half effort from Steven Gerrard which was deflected home by Reading defender Ryan Bertrand.

The Reds then lost both Gerrard and Fernando Torres to injuries before the Coca-Cola Championship side equalised with Gylfi Sigurdsson's penalty in stoppage time to force the extra half hour, in which substitute Shane Long headed the winner.

Reading had taken the game to their illustrious opponents in the second half in search of an equaliser and should have had it through Jobi McAnuff.

The winger jinked his way through the home defence on a mesmerising 60-yard run but sidefooted wide from 12-yards with only goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri to beat.

Had he found the net it would have been one of the goals of the competition, and he shook his head in disbelief, later admitting he thought he had blown Reading's chance of even pegging back the Reds.

But after Yossi Benayoun was judged to have clipped Long's heels, Sigurdsson stepped up to calmly fire home the penalty that took the tie into extra-time and sent up the position from which Long grabbed the match-winning glory.

Peter Lovenkrands scored a hat-trick to fire Newcastle into the fourth round as they recorded a 3-0 win over Plymouth.

Lovenkrands made the most of two fine first-half deliveries from winger Jonas Gutierrez and then converted Kevin Nolan's 72nd-minute cross to book his side a trip to Coca-Cola Championship promotion rivals West Brom six days after the two sides meet in the league at St James' Park.

However, Newcastle could only muster an attendance of 15,805 for their third-round replay.
