Luton Town 5 York City 0: York stranded after Ingham's early dismissal allowing Luton to run riot

A 14th-minute red card for goalkeeper Michael Ingham saw York City capitulate at Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Luton Town.

Ingham was sent to the dressing rooms after tripping Luton winger Claude Gnapka and, with no substitute goalkeeper, the Minstermen turned to captain Chris Smith for the first half and then substitute Greg Young after the break.

Centre-half Smith was beaten four times before the interval by Andy Drury, Gnapka, Lloyd Owusu and Zdenek Kroca while substitute Taiwo Atieno scored past Young.

An awful night for the Minstermen was then compounded on 81 minutes when midfielder Jonathan Smith was also sent off for a second bookable offence after a poor challenge on Godfrey Poku.

Drury opened the scoring from the free-kick conceded by Ingham before his dismissal with a 20-yard effort deflecting off the visitors' wall to deceive Smith.

The Hatters doubled their lead on 31 minutes when Gnapka headed in from Jake Howells' cross. Ex-Sheffield Wednesday striker Owusu then marked his Luton debut with a goal, heading in from Drury's corner.

Defender Kroca added a fourth in first-half stoppage time, volleying in at the far post from another dead-ball delivery from Drury. Young made good saves to thwart both Howells and Matthew Barnes-Homer after the break, but, in between, substitute Atieno headed in Barnes-Homer's cross to complete the rout for Luton.
