Luton Town v Doncaster Rovers: Consistency sought by Rovers' boss Darren Ferguson

IT has been a fair while since Doncaster Rovers fans travelled to an away fixture with such a sense of expectancy as today.

Luton Town’s Kenilworth Road may be a relic from the past back to the Canon League and some halcyon days of top-flight football in Bedfordshire in the Eighties, but as far as second-placed Rovers are concerned ahead of this afternoon’s game, it is almost as big as it gets in this 2016-17 season. Certainly so far.

This and next Saturday’s trip to Fratton Park.

Rovers’ charge up the League Two table and the consistency that Darren Ferguson’s side are showing, following some early-season teething problems and a long injury list, are admirable.

Big tests now arrive at the much-fancied duo of promotion contenders Luton and Portsmouth, with a home game with another competitive side in Carlisle United sandwiched in between.

Not that Ferguson, whose side are the current top scorers in League Two, is reading too much into the fixture list, with his focus being on the process as opposed to the opposition.

Ferguson, whose side have taken an impressive 15 points from the last 18 available, said: “I am not saying to myself that if we do not get the right results in the next three games, that is us not having a chance. Or that if we win the next three, we are going to go and walk this league.

“I just want consistency and a good level of performance and the same mentality that we have shown. We have had hard games up to now and we know that.

“Just because you are expected to do something does not always mean that you will.

“We will treat these games the same and, first and foremost, look at getting a good level of performance through the team.

“If we do that, I feel we will give anyone in this team a game.”
