The 20-year-old has signed a loan deal until the end of the season and becomes Chris Wilder’s second January signing following the arrival of Samir Carruthers.

Riley met his new Blades team-mates today and is in contention to make his debut for the League One leaders in Saturday’s visit of Gillingham.

“I’m delighted to be here and can’t wait to get out there and hopefully show what I’m all about,” said midfielder Riley. “To be able to come to Sheffield United is brilliant for me. It’s a move that ticks every box and makes perfect sense.

“I’m really looking forward to getting involved and helping the lads to try and get promotion,” Riley said.

“They’ve made a really good start and I want to be a part of helping that carry on.

“The manager (Wilder) has explained what he wants from me and I’ll be doing everything to try and give him and the team that.”

National League side York City have made a double transfer move in the loan market.

Gary Mills has drafted in Hull City striker Johan ter Horst and Wrexham defender Hamza Bencherif.

Ter Horst, 21, and French-born Bencherif – the 28-year-old played for FC Halifax Town last season – could make their debuts for York in Saturday’s home game with Barrow.

New Chesterfield manager Gary Caldwell insists he will not abandon his footballing principles as he attempts to steer the Spireites away from relegation trouble.

Caldwell won the League One title last season with Wigan playing attractive, possession-based football but yesterday he joined a club battling at the other end of the division following just four wins in their last 19 league matches.

“I don’t think I’ll change how I play,” said Caldwell, who was sacked by Wigan in October.

“I believe in players, I give players the freedom to go and play. I have to give the players the belief and confidence to go and express themselves and I saw a lot on Saturday against Coventry that pleased me. I have to try and enhance that.”
