Mandaric to fund Irvine's Hillsborough recruits

MILAN MANDARIC has given Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine his full backing in the transfer market.

Wednesday this week made their first signing of the mid-season window when they brought in Plymouth defender Reda Johnson for an undisclosed fee and new owner Mandaric has confirmed Irvine will have more money to spend to strengthen the club's promotion push.

Mandaric said: "We were not the only club (interested in Reda) but Alan was very keen and determined to bring him to Hillsborough and my job is to support the manager in the transfer market, which I will continue to do.

"We are working extremely hard to recruit the players that Alan has identified and I will do everything possible to bring these players to the club.

"Sheffield Wednesday is a big club entering into a new era and it is our intention to deliver promotion this year.

"We are only interested in the players who have the right amount of talent and desire to play for this great club. Everyone involved with Sheffield Wednesday recognises the need for new players because although we have a good squad, it is still only a small squad."

Across the city, manager Micky Adams says he will wait until after Saturday's FA Cup tie with Aston Villa before making any moves in the transfer market.

The 49-year-old only took the reins at Sheffield United a week ago and has overseen a draw and defeat in his first two games in charge. "After the Villa game I'll have been able to have a look at most people here in action," said Adams.

"That's when I'll have a better idea of exactly where we are and what we need to do."

The former Liverpool player is a target for Premier League strugglers Wolves and was watched by Wanderers manager Mick McCarthy on Monday.

Robins said: "I don't think there is any chance of keeping Adam. There has been interest from one or two clubs, but that's out of my control now."

Peter Halmosi has left Hull City by mutual consent. The 31-year-old Hungarian international scored one goal in 27 appearances after signing a four-year deal in July 2008.

Rotherham United have extended the loan of Hull City's Will Atkinson until the end of the season, but Tom Elliott has returned to Leeds United after six months at the Don Valley Stadium. The striker made seven first-team appearances in all competitions.
