Mansfield Town 0 York City 1: Barren spell ended to put York back in hunt

A superbly-struck shot by Courtney Pitt gave York City their first victory in eight matches and sent them back into a promotion play-off place at the expense of Kettering Town who suffered defeat at Altrincham.

York were full value for the three points and had many chances to have won by a greater margin, Richard Brodie having a penalty saved.

York had Paul Harsley, on loan from Chesterfield, in midfield in place of the suspended Levi Mackin, while Adam Smith was replaced by Neil Barrett.

The visitors began strongly and Michael Gash had a probing low shot saved, while Courtney Pitt saw his 20-yard effort charged down.

Brodie also had a shot blocked and when Mansfield hit back Louis Briscoe shot across the goalmouth.

Brodie shot over the bar after James Meredith and Gash had combined well to set up the opening.

Jamie Clarke and Harsley prompted well in midfield in further York raids but the goal wouldn't come.

York had Djoumin Sangare cautioned after a series of fouls before the visitors finally went ahead with a superb goal by Pitt in the 61st minute.

Harsley did well to set up the opening which allowed Pitt to unleash a tremendous shot into the roof of the net from around 20 yards.

Two minutes later, York had a great chance to extend their lead when Pitt was fouled by Jon Challinor but Brodie's shot was well-saved by Alan Marriott diving to his right.

Mansfield captain Luke Foster, formerly on loan to York, was sent off for a foul on Michael Rankine after 82 minutes.
