Lewis Hunt, James Hanson, Luke Oliver, Tom Adeyemi and Gareth Evans all returned to the starting eleven for the visit of Stevenage.
Simon Ramsden, Steve Williams and Jake Speight were rested after their efforts against Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup, while Michael Flynn made a surprise return to the bench.
Gareth Evans (32) scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.
"It was a very important three points, not deserved, I think," said City boss Peter Taylor.
"Stevenage were better than us today and will feel very disappointed they didn't get a result.
"We've got to learn from that. We started a bit nervous and then we carried on.
"We weren't brave enough on the ball and we were quite disappointing to be honest but maybe Tuesday night took a little bit more out of the players than I thought."
