MATCH CENTRE Hull City 1 Burnley 4: Dowie left "sick" by defeat

GRAHAM ALEXANDER netted two second half penalties to nudge Hull City closer to the drop.

The veteran midfielder kept his cool from the spot after the Tigers had twice been guilty of suicidal defending in their own box.

First, a failure to clear a 64th minute corner saw the ball fall to Michael Duff, who was unceremoniously dumped to the floor by George Boateng.

Referee Martin Atkinson had no option other than to point to the spot and Alexander duly drove the ball into the corner of the net.

Then, just six minutes later, it was Bernard Mendy's turn to clumsily knock a Claret to the floor with David Nugent this time on the receiving end. Alexander again converted coolly, though this time Hull did at least have valid grounds for complaint with Nugent appearing to have handled the ball on the halfway line during the build-up.

Burnley then underlined their superiority in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Wade Elliott curled in a free-kick to complete the rout.

Hull's best chance of a disappointing second half came seven minutes from time when Jozy Altidore just failed to get on the end of a Jan Venegoor of Hesselink cross.

"The manner of the defeat is the galling part of it," said boss Iain Dowie.

"It makes you sick to the pit of your stomach, because I thought the game started well.

"It's about heart and desire and we had one player, George Boateng, who played with that today - I thought he was outstanding."
