MATCH CENTRE Middlesbrough 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0: We deserved something, rues Irvine

SCOTT McDonald scored the only goal of the game to keep Middlesbrough's play-off hopes alive and nudge Sheffield Wednesday a step closer to relegation.

McDonald struck four minutes before the interval with a 25 yard drive that took a huge deflection off a Wednesday player on the edge of the box.

Although Wednesday were more than a match for Boro they lacked punch in the penalty box.

Jermaine Johnson wasted Wednesday's best opportunity midway through the first half when, in a one-on-one, he shot straight at the goalkeeper's legs.

The result means the Owls are now a point adrift of safety while Boro close the gap on the top six to four points.

"We are extremely disappointed," Irvine admitted. "We did enough to come away with something.

"The goal was very cruel on us. I felt we were the better team for most of the game.

"Boro were a threat on the counter-attack, especially as the game wore on, but we had the chances to win it.

"I lost count of the number of times their defenders dived in to block shots from going in. We came close on a lot of occasions but maybe we didn't directly test their keeper often enough."
