MATCH CENTRE Sheffield United 1 Coventry 0: Blades will keep on fighting, says Ellis

Richard Cresswell's second-half strike secured Sheffield United their first Coca-Cola Championship win in six matches and condemned Coventry to a third straight defeat.

Blades striker Cresswell swept home Glenn Little's cross two minutes after the interval, but victory has done little to resurrect the South Yorkshire side's play-off chances.

Kevin Blackwell's side began the day nine points adrift of the top six after winning only one of their previous nine league games and this encounter against another team struggling for form - Coventry are without a win in their last eight matches - provided limited entertainment for a crowd of 23,603.

Coventry, whose last success was at relegated Peterborough on March 6, raised their game after falling behind but failed to carve out any clear-cut chances.

"Every win is a much-needed win," Blades No 2 Sam Ellis said. "But I thought that one was well deserved. We had the better chances and we kept on chipping away. In the end we got there and we are pleased that we did.

"We are determined for the campaign not to simply peter out because that wouldn't be the right thing to do.

"But we've got some good characters here, people who approach their profession in the right manner, and so they know that isn't going to be an option."
