Max Clark's determination to 'come home' and rejoin Hull City shone through immediately, says Grant McCann

Despite interest from clubs in the Championship, Max Clark did not have to think twice when offered the chance to rejoin his home-town club.

The 25-year-old left-back returned to Hull City on transfer deadline day following a two-and-a-half year spell with Vitesse Arnhem in Holland's Eredivisie.

The Tigers academy product had plenty of potential suitors in England, but was determined to link back up with his former employers once Grant McCann got in touch.

"There were quite a number of clubs interested in him in this league and the one above, so he's showed real determination to come here, which is pleasing," City's head coach revealed.

"Once you speak to someone and they show that they've got a real determination to come and play for you and help you then that's great because you're almost there.

"The next bit is the tactical information and understanding your role in the team, but once you've got that bit then there's definitely scope to work with."

Hull's move to bring Clark back home came about after Brandon Fleming picked up an injury late last month, with McCann desperate for an out-and-out left-back to provide cover for Callum Elder.

And, while the Tigers chief had plenty of names on his shortlist, he has revealed that sealing a deal for Clark was his top priority.

"We had three or four different options that we looked at once we found out about the Brandon set-back but the one that was coming off the page to me was Max Clark," he added.

"Once I spoke to him it was a straight yes. He said 'I'd love to come back to Hull City, it's my club, my family are Hull fans, I'm a Hull fan, I've enjoyed the experience at Vitesse but now I'm ready to come home,' these were his words.

"That was it, once I heard that, I spoke to Ehab [Allam - chairman], I spoke to Lee [Darnborough - head of recruitment] and the deal was done in a matter of hours.

"We're really pleased to have him. He's one of Hull's own and he wants to be in a team that is successful.

"He's definitely going to push Callum Elder, that's for sure. He's an excellent player and has a tremendous attitude."

Hull, who currently sit top of League One, travel to rock-bottom Burton Albion on Saturday.
