McCann’s brace hoists Burnley

Chris McCann scored a goal in each half as Burnley condemned Ipswich to a sixth consecutive loss with a 4-0 rout at Turf Moor.

Before kick-off, a minute’s applause was held to commemorate the life of Gary Speed, and perhaps fittingly it was Wales striker Sam Vokes – pictured heading home under pressure from Ipswich goalkeeper Arran Lee-Barrett and Ivar Ingimarsson – who opened the scoring for the home side.

Vokes, who netted a brace in Speed’s final game in charge of the national side – a 4-1 win over Norway earlier this month – got the decisive touch to Keith Treacy’s 33rd-minute corner. McCann had claimed a last-minute winner when Burnley previously beat Ipswich in November 2006, and the midfielder was on hand to double his side’s advantage from close range in first-half stoppage time.

His next goal came midway through a second half where Jewell’s men displayed scant response – Burnley goalkeeper Lee Grant was a virtual spectator on a bitterly cold Lancashire evening – before Jay Rodriguez made it a 34th birthday to remember for Clarets boss Eddie Howe.
