Mellis returns on permanent deal

BARNSLEY: Former Sheffield United and Chelsea midfielder Jacob Mellis has agreed to sign a two-year deal with the Tykes.

Mellis, 21, is the second arrival of the summer at Oakwell after the capture last week of Portsmouth midfielder Kelvin Utuhu.

The former England Under-19 international played 15 games on loan for the Tykes in 2011 and was released by Chelsea in March after setting off a smoke grenade at the club’s training ground.

Eygptian international striker Mido is next on manager Keith Hill’s shopping list and is due in South Yorkshire tomorrow to finalise a deal.

Barnsley midfielder Jacob Butterfield, meanwhile, has underlined his intention to leave.

Butterfield had been invited to make a decision on his future by yesterday afternoon but ignored the club’s plea,

General manager Don Rowing said: “It’s disappointing that he has not been back to us and we can only assume that he is in negotiations with another club.”

Bradford-born Butterfield, 21, has been linked with both Newcastle United and Reading and is still completing his recovery from cruciate knee ligament surgery.
