His loss now means City have just 13 fit outfield players with the Premier League season a little over three weeks away.

The loss of the experienced defended follows Moses Odubajo being ruled out for six months with a knee problem sustained at Grimsby Town last Friday.

Adding to Steve Bruce’s troubles are Jake Livermore and Tom Huddlestone being ruled out for two weeks due to Achilles and ankle problems respectively.

Allan McGregor and Alex Bruce were ruled out until the New Year several weeks ago.
