Middlesbrough 2-2 Hull City: Snow joke as Boro rescue a point but are left in bottom three

MIDDLESBROUGH boss Tony Mowbray praised his struggling side after they twice came from behind to claim a draw with Hull at a snow-covered Riverside Stadium.

The Tigers took the lead from a Robert Koren strike before Boro levelled as Tony McMahon crossed for Leroy Lita to head home.

Hull regained the lead in the 41st minute as Koren floated a free-kick into a crowded box for Anthony Gerrard to send a looping header into the top corner.

The home side came out fighting after the break and levelled within 30 seconds as Lita crossed for Scott McDonald to power in a near-post header.

Mowbray said: "We were all disappointed. We thought we should and could have won especially after we got the second goal so early after the restart. We did well to come from behind twice. That showed how much we wanted it. We had the best of the game I thought and it was a bit frustrating that we conceded.

"In the first half they never really threatened our goal yet somehow they managed to score twice but we showed character to get back and regain control.

"The snow wasn't helpful for us. It is not ideal when the ball doesn't roll, especially for the players who like the ball at their feet and especially because we like to pass it. But both sides said it was playable and even though at times you couldn't see the lines there was no moaning from either dug-out."

Hull boss Nigel Pearson, who included new loan signing Cameron Stewart in the starting line-up, said he believed it was touch and go whether the game should have been played.

Pearson said: "Another 20 minutes and it might not have kicked off. I was happy enough that it started but once the snow got heavier, well I have seen games like that curtailed.

"There was lots of honesty and endeavour on both sides and neither bench was moaning but the weather did make it hard to get the best out of the players.

"We got something out of it and we kept the unbeaten run going – it's five away from home now – so it is easier to be philosophical about it. I may not have been so happy if we had lost."

The Tigers should have gone in front with the game at 1-1 when Emnes gave the ball away to Liam Rosenior, whose low cross was palmed away by Steele into the path of Barmby who could not hook the ball into the empty net. Emnes had a chance to snatch the points for Boro but his shot was parried by Mannone while Lita was also off-target.

Kamil Zayatte had a chance for Hull but chose the wrong option as he shot into the side-netting rather than crossing.

Middlesbrough: Steele, McMahon, Bates, Wheater, Bennett, Robson, Tavares (Kink 65), Bailey, Emnes, Lita, McDonald (Boyd 85). Unused substitutes: Ripley, Park, Arca, Hoyte, Smallwood.
