Bettinelli signing will provide a much-needed addition for Middlesbrough

MIDDLESBROUGH manager Neil Warnock is set to make a much-needed transfer breakthrough with the addition of Fulham keeper Marcus Bettinelli on a season-long loan.

Bettinelli, who made 14 appearances in the Cottagers' promotion campaign last term, but ended up as deputy to Marek Rodak, is to undergo a medical on Tuesday after agreeing a move from London.

The 28-year-old could make his debut in the club's televised Championship opener at Watford on Friday, which kicks off the new EFL season.

Bettinelli will provide a senior goalkeeping option for Warnock, with January arrival Dejan Stojanovic having limited experience in England and having failed to convince the Boro chief regarding his credentials to be a regular number one - prompting the move for the Fulham man.

Bettinelli has played more than 100 games for Fulham and was called into the England squad two years ago.

Meanwhile, the future of young custodian Aynsley Pears looks uncertain, with the 22-year-old - son of former Boro favourite Stephen - in the final year of his contract and being linked with a move away.

Back-up keeper Tomas Mejias is also to leave. Once on the books of Real Madrid, Mejias has been linked with Dinamo Bucharest.

So far, Boro have only brought in former QPR defender Grant Hall during the current window and have missed out on the likes of Kieffer Moore and Joe Williams.
