Boro boss set for breather after busy run

Tony Mowbray is looking forward to catching his breath over the next fortnight after a hectic period of action.

Today’s visit of Watford is Middlesbrough’s sixth game in 22 days since the last international break and ahead of two weeks off, the Boro manager is ready for the chance to reinvigorate his squad.

“It is a well-timed break for us because in this league the games come thick and fast and I think most teams would probably say the same,” said Mowbray.

“Of course sometimes it may be the wrong time, if you’ve won two or three on the bounce and it means you lose a little bit of momentum. But it does give you time to take a little breather.”

Middlesbrough’s Justin Hoyte (hamstring) and Nicky Bailey (calf) will be assessed while Kevin Thomson (hamstring) is also being monitored.

Teenage midfielder Richie Smallwood could make his first start of the season if Nicky Bailey fails to overcome a calf injury.

Watford striker Craig Beattie is a doubt (hamstring) while John Eustace (back) is likely to miss out.
