Carayol was taken off on a stretcher after tripping over the ball in the final minutes in a challenge with Bournemouth left-back Ian Harte.

Manger Aitor Karanka said: “You could tell that he was injured. It’s his knee, but at the moment we have no news.

“We have to hope that it does not involve the cruciate ligament, but he will have a scan before we know the extent of the injury.”

Middlesbrough’s draw was their fourth without a goal in six matches, and their 11th clean sheet in 16 league fixtures.

He said: “We need to do more, we need to play better. (How) one team can play how we play at home and (how) we play away, it’s difficult to understand why.

“I want to thank the fans who have come 300 miles across the country to watch this and I would have liked us to have rewarded them with some goals. At least we have a point, so we have to be pleased with that.”
