Emnes makes mark again for Boro while Burnley made to battle

Marvin Emnes hit a hat-trick as Middlesbrough cruised past 10-man Walsall and into the second round of the Carling Cup.

The Dutchman followed up his first-half brace with a second-half penalty in a 3-0 victory to take his tally to four already this season after he previously netted on the opening day of the league season.

Boro’s progression extends their sequence of not having exited in the first round of the League Cup back to 1985, but for League One Walsall it represents their worst run in the competition having been eliminated at the first hurdle for a fifth successive season.

Boro manager Tony Mowbray made five changes to the XI who drew 2-2 with Portsmouth on Saturday with Danny Coyne starting between the posts to make his 500th career appearance.

His Saddlers counterpart Dean Smith was forced into an early reshuffle after just 12 minutes when midfielder Adam Chambers, match-winner on the opening day against former club Leyton Orient, was dismissed for a two-footed challenge on Richard Smallwood.

It took Boro little time to capitalise as Emnes fired a low effort into the bottom corner from 18 yards after the hosts had failed to deal with a ball from the right.

Emnes doubled both his and Boro’s advantage after 37 minutes, converting Justin Hoyte’s left-wing cross in style.

The tie was over as a contest seven minutes after the break as Smallwood was brought down in the area by Kevan Hurst, leaving Emnes to produce his third goal, from the spot, and take home the match ball.

Jay Rodriguez struck four goals to help Burnley see off the challenge of battling Burton 6-3 after extra-time in a thriller at Turf Moor.

Following a goalless first half, Burnley seemed on their way through to the second round as they led 3-1 with seven minutes of normal time remaining thanks to two penalties from England Under-21 international Rodriguez and a fine strike from Charlie Austin

However, League Two Burton had other ideas and, having earlier made it 2-1 through Cleveland Taylor, they sent the game to extra-time following late goals from Calvin Zola and Jacques Maghoma.

Burton’s hopes of an upset lasted barely three minutes of the additional time, though, as Ross Wallace and Rodriguez both netted quickfire goals from distance to put Burnley 5-3 ahead, and this time there was no way back for the visitors, with Rodriguez adding another in the 106th minute to seal the win.

Newly-promoted League One side Bury caused an upset as they coasted to a 3-1 win over Coventry at Gigg Lane.

Andy Bishop cancelled out Roy O’Donovan’s early strike before Ryan Lowe hit a match-winning double late on.

Championship Millwall won 1-0 at Plymouth, and League Two Hereford caused a minor upset as Yoann Arquin scored in injury time to overcome League One Brentford at Edgar Street.

Bournemouth were the biggest winners of the night as they thrashed Dagenham and Redbridge 5-0.
