WITH Middlesbrough’s season unravelling in alarming fashion, the onus on the club’s senior players to front up is intensified.

A new low in Boro’s roller-coaster campaign was recorded on Saturday without them so much as kicking a ball, with results elsewhere meaning that they are in the relegation zone ahead of tonight’s game .

Two points adrift of safety, Boro are seeking to record their first home win since Boxing Day with Jonathan Woodgate’s side in the midst of their second wretched winless run this term.

After a 10-match sequence without a league win in the autumn, Boro have now not sampled victory in their last nine Championship games.

Utility man Jonny Howson, said: “I cannot think off the top of my head, but I will have been in this position before.

“Robbie (Keane) mentioned before the (Leeds) game that the good thing about football is that there is always that next game to put it right.”

Boro’s painful run of form has seen them fail to find the net in their last three games, with the issue compounded by the likely absence of top-scorer Ashley Fletcher, although Howson believes that there are goals outlets in the club’s ranks.

He added: “I believe there is. We have done it a small amount and we have got lads who can score goals. It is not just a case of putting it on them. The whole team has got to chip in and we have to provide for them as well.

“We are very confident with the lads we have got in the changing room.

“But the bottom line is I can say this, that and the other. We need to go out there on the pitch and actually do it.”

Last six games: Middlesbrough DLDLLL; Nottingham Forest LWLDDW.
