Mike Pollitt happy to lend helping hand in Rotherham United goalkeeper search

Pollitt returned to his former club on Thursday, hot on the heels of the departure of Andy Dibble to Cardiff City, with the Lancastrian linking up with his former team-mate and good friend Paul Warne.

Pollitt has revealed his delight at his return and is likely to add some suggestions if requested, with the Millers searching for a new custodian with Lee Camp out for the rest of the season with injury and likely to have played his final game for the club.

Pollitt, whose last goalkeeping coaching position was at Wigan, said: “With Gary Caldwell losing his job at Wigan, he has been interviewed for other jobs in the last couple of weeks and he has been asking me what I have been up to.

“But when Warney came in this week, I just thought I definitely want to come back. I want to be involved at the highest level possible, the Championship was a big factor in that although the team are struggling. “I know the goalkeepers around the country, who are playing who are not playing, and that’s where I can give him advice in targets who he can go for.

“I have’t really spoke with him about it yet, I think the club have a few targets in mind before I came here. They might want to follow those through first and if they don’t come off then I can help.”

One potential target already linked with the Millers is former loan goalkeeper Emi Martinez, but interim-boss Warne has cast doubt over a potential move for the Arsenal player, despite rating the 24-year-old highly.

He said: “I love Martinez, we had him here before, I just don’t know whether he would be in the availability or cost bracket.

“I have had a good conversation with the chairman and he would rather sign players (permanently) than have them on loan because we are trying to build a side for next season.

“If we get Martinez in, that’s all well and good, but then come the end of the season, we will have the same problem again.

“We are trying to get players in on a longer-term basis, but if I can’t get a keeper in on a longer-term basis then I will go back to the loan market and there will be possible names I visit.”
