Millers hopeful of retaining Peter Odemwingie

CARETAKER manager Paul Warne is confident that Peter Odemwingie will remain at Rotherham United for the rest of the season after tabling him an offer until May.

The 35-year-old’s short-term deal runs until January 25, with the ex-Nigerian international offered a extension, which interim boss Warne expects him to sign.

Odemwingie’s chances of regular starts are likely to be boosted if Chelsea elect to recall Izzy Brown from his loan spell.

Speculation abounds that Brown will return to London and be loaned out once more with his parent club, the Premier League leaders, said to be keen for him to play at a leading Championship club.

Warne said: “I have offered him (Odemwingie) an extension to the end of the season.

“I presume he is going to sign it. I have not been told to the contrary.

“At the beginning of last week, he came up to me at the training ground and I said, ‘Have you spoken to your agent because the club’s been in contact with your agent?’

“He said, ‘Yeah, thanks very much’, and shook my hand.

“That, to me, means he is saying thanks for the extension. That is how I read it.

“I presume it’s done or if it isn’t done, it’s going to be done. “

On the incoming front, the Millers continue to be linked with Grimsby Town forward Omar Bogle and while Warne is “aware” of the striker, he is sticking to his policy of not discussing individual targets.

Warne said: “I am well aware of him. (But) I am aware of anyone who scores a significant amount of goals.”

He has revealed that goalkeeper Lee Camp is out for the rest of the season with injury and, with his deal expiring in the summer, the likelihood is that the 30-year-old will have played his last game for the club.

Midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey has joined Charlton on a full-time basis after the Millers and parent club Brighton mutually agreed to end his loan at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Warne will make a decision on whether to recall Richie Smallwood from his loan spell at Scunthorpe United earlier next week.

Reports from Lincolnshire suggested that Iron manager Graham Alexander is already making firm plans for Smallwood remaining at the club, but Warne is yet to decide.
