Millers' spending not finished with Taylor, claims Stubbs

The Millers signed Peterborough winger Jon Taylor this week – in a record deal, reported to be £500,000 – but are not done spending under chairman Tony Stewart.

Stubbs yesterday revealed Rotherham had already made “two or three” offers that exceed the fee paid for Taylor.

One of those is understood to be a £600,000 offer for Tottenham midfielder Grant Ward – who starred on loan with the Millers last year – but he opted to join Ipswich Town for a similar fee instead.

Stubbs – who last night signed Celtic midfielder Scott Allan on a season-long loan – is excited at the club’s potential. “I don’t think it will be the last time we break it (the transfer record) if I am being honest,” he said.

“I am cut from the same cloth as the chairman, I am very ambitious. When we spoke together, when I got the job, we shared the same outlook for the football club: to take the club in an upwards curve.

“Signings like this are what we have to do in order to do that.

“We have actually had another two or three offers in for players that have been bigger than the record we have just broken.

“Unfortunately, for whatever reason, we haven’t been able to get them over the line,” added Stubbs, who wants to sign a striker, another winger and a full-back before the transfer deadline.

Allan, 24, will be reunited with Stubbs, after the pair worked together in Scotland at Hibernian.

Stubbs said: “He is a very talented player,. He is different; he will take the ball in very difficult situations, he has got really good feet, he has got really good vision and he tries things other players wouldn’t do.”
