Millwall 0 Sheffield United 1: Speed delighted with victory

SHEFFIELD UNITED moved out of the npower Championship relegation zone after Andy Reid's first goal for the club gave them a 1-0 win at Millwall.

The Lions dominated the early stages of the game with Steve Morison forcing Steve Simonsen into a save before Danny Shittu headed over when he should have scored.

However just before the half-hour mark John Marquis's pass to Morison was intercepted and a quick Sheffield United break resulted in on-loan Sunderland midfielder Reid firing in off the underside of the bar.

Millwall pressed for an equaliser in the second half but the Blades held on for their first win in five matches.

The result moved Gary Speed's side up to 19th, just one point behind Millwall who dropped to 17th place.

Blades manager Gary Speed was delighted with the three points.

Speed said: "That was a very important win for us and hopefully we can build on that now.

"The important thing is not go into the game with Palace and waste it. We need to win that so hopefully we can take some confidence from this win.

"I hope it's not a false dawn because we've had a couple of those before. This is a difficult place to come and they put their bodies on the line. All things considered it was a fantastic result.

"I'll have to speak to Steve Bruce and (Andy) Reid as well. I knew he is a quality player when I brought him here and he chipped in with a goal but he's shown he's a good player since he's arrived. But it was a good all round performance by everyone. Second half we lacked a bit of confidence and I felt we could have pressed on a bit more and looked for a second goal but we held on and overall I'm really pleased.

"I thought Millwall had the majority of the game second half and that was the one disappointing thing.

"I think we looked dangerous on the break but we didn't get on the break enough – we sat back a bit and were cautious, which is understandable."

The Lions started well and with 19 minutes gone the dangerous Morison got a sight of goal but his lofted effort was saved by Simonsen.

In the 29th minute the visitors made Millwall pay for their profligacy when a quick break saw Yeates play in Reid who finished off in style.
