Millwall 1 Huddersfield Town 3: Powell takes encouragement from Town handling ‘real test’

TEN-MAN Huddersfield Town celebrated a fifth win in a row against Millwall and manager Chris Powell was full of praise for his players, who battled on despite Nahki Wells seeing red.

“Coming to Millwall is always a tall order and it has been a very good day for us away from home against a side who are in and around us in the league,” said Powell, whose side are now 14th and 10 points clear of their third-bottom hosts.

“We knew we had to take something from the game and that was quite easily my best performance as manager.

“Considering we went down to 10 men, this team, which has showed a lot of togetherness recently, put in a very good performance against the odds.

“It was never a sending-off, considering Jacob Butterfield nearly got decapitated in the first half. For us to come through all that and show the tactical awareness to go 3-1 up was very pleasing to see. When we went down to 10 men we felt that if we kept our shape we could keep up with Millwall and we did.

“Maybe Butterfield’s goal was somewhat fortunate, but sometimes taking that chance merits the fortune.

“It was a real test and I thought all my players stood up to it, and nothing beats a win for confidence heading into our next game.”

Millwall fans were hoping for a first home win in nine after Stefan Maierhofer cancelled out Sean Scannell’s opener before Wells saw red for his second bookable offence five minutes after the restart when he upended Shaun Williams in an aerial challenge.

But it was not to be as Butterfield let rip from distance with 15 minutes left before James Vaughan sealed three points for Huddersfield late on from 12 yards, sending David Forde the wrong way from the spot after Harry Bunn had been brought down and referee Michael Jones had awarded a penalty.
