Millwall 1 Sheffield United 0: Adkins rues lack of quality

With sixth-placed Bradford City losing, United could have reduced the gap to just three points with victory in south London.

But Chris Taylor’s second-minute effort was enough for Millwall to win 1-0 against Sheffield United while Barnsley climbed into the final play-off spot courtesy of a 2-0 victory at Fleetwood. Joe Davis’ own goal and a Josh Scowen header sealed another three points for the Tykes.

Blades boss Nigel Adkins was left to rue his side’s inability to convert possession into goals.

“We’ve had good spells, we got crosses in, the keeper has made a really good save from Billy Sharp,” said Adkins.

“I thought we dominated the second half, their game management in respect of running the clock down was very good.

“As soon as we got a bit of momentum the game was stopped with either an injury or a delaying tactic of some description.

“We controlled a large chunk of the game, getting in the attacking third. Was the quality there to go and win a game of football? You’d probably say not.”

Burton took another step towards the League One title with a comprehensive 4-0 win at Port Vale.

Lucas Akins’ strike and a Anthony Grant own goal put the leaders in control at the break before Mark Duffy and Calum Butcher netted early in the second half to have the game won by the hour mark.

Late goals ensured Wigan and Walsall maintained the six-point gap behind Albion. Substitute Haris Vuckic was on target with 10 minutes remaining as Wigan won 1-0 at home to Bradford.

Walsall needed Tom Bradshaw’s 89th minute equaliser and an injury-time winner from Matt Preston to come from behind to beat bottom-of-the-table Colchester 2-1. The U’s had led through Alex Gilbey’s header just before half-time.

Gillingham stay fourth but continue to wobble and a 1-1 draw at Southend means it is just one win in the last six games for them. Anthony Wordsworth put Southend ahead but Luke Norris equalised early in the second half.

Coventry could have closed the gap on the top six but they were held to a goalless draw at home to Swindon.

Blackpool beat Crewe 2-1 in the big game at the bottom of the table and it was eventful to say the least at Gresty Road.

Jack Redshaw headed the visitors in front but was then sent off for a second bookable offence. Marcus Haber equalised but Crewe were level for just a minute as Tom Aldred netted in the 85th minute. That was not the end of the drama though, Bradden Inman had the chance to rescue a point for Crewe but he put his last-minute penalty over the crossbar.

There was plenty of action at Boundary Park too where Oldham lost 3-2 to neighbours Rochdale.

Aaron Amadi-Holloway put the hosts ahead but Ian Henderson levelled with a penalty before being sent off for a second yellow. Amadi-Holloway then put the ball in the net at either end with Callum Camps scoring for Rochdale in between.

Doncaster’s dreadful run continued with a 2-1 home loss to Peterborough and Rovers are now in the relegation zone. They led through James Coppinger’s early strike but goals from Aaron Williams and Ricardo Santos, in the third minute of injury-time, saw Posh prevail.

Chesterfield are keeping themselves just out of danger after drawing 1-1 at Scunthorpe. Paddy Madden put the Iron in front but debutant Jamal Campbell-Ryce equalised.

Sullay KaiKai twice had Shrewsbury in front at Bury but Tom Soares and Peter Clarke cancelled out his efforts and it finished 2-2 at Gigg Lane.
