Millwall 4 Huddersfield Town 0: Hunt’s red card adds to misery as Town are mauled by Lions

DEFENDER Jack Hunt apologised to his Huddersfield Town team-mates after being sent off in the heavy defeat at Millwall.

Millwall extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to six games and striker Chris Wood took his Lions tally to five goals since arriving on loan from West Bromwich in September with a brace either side of the break.

James Henry and Liam Trotter added goals on 78 and 87 minutes, respectively.

Huddersfield’s calamitous trip to London was made worse late on as Hunt received a straight red card.

Huddersfield first-team coach Glynn Snodin said: “It was the last 25 to 30 minutes that killed us – we lost a bit of our discipline.

“In the first half, it was fairly even and I think we felt a bit unlucky to be a goal down at half-time.

“But some of the players lost their discipline and we were pushed. They’re upset but we’ve talked to them about it in the dressing room and we’ll try to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“Jack was sent off for dissent. He felt he’d been fouled and the referee has sent him off for what he has said. In fairness, he’s apologised to the rest of the players and put his hand up to that one.

“I think it’s in the heat of the moment – we’ve all done it – but he recognises he’s made a mistake.

“We’ve got a good team here but the last two away games have been disappointing. We’ve got a bit frustrated because we were creating chances but nothing was quite dropping for us.”

Wood opened the scoring after 28 minutes as Darius Henderson won the ball in midfield before finding the striker, who made no mistake in sliding the ball in from 12 yards past Alex Smithies.

Huddersfield came out a different side after the break and dominated possession and territory but, unfortunately for the visitors, Millwall doubled their lead after 60 minutes, Henry sending Wood through for a neat finish and his second goal.

It was Wood’s turn to act as provider after 79 minutes as he laid off to Henry and the midfielder finished calmly, before Hunt was red carded five minutes from time.

Millwall added their fourth goal after 87 minutes as Trotter hammered home the final nail in Huddersfield’s coffin, curling home a tremendous shot.

“Chris is a goalscorer and he has produced two very good finishes but I think even he will say that he has got the perfect foil in Darius Henderson,” said Millwall chief Kenny Jackett.
