Morgan blow has Sheffield United boss on the lookout for replacements

SHEFFIELD United captain Chris Morgan has been ruled out for the rest of the season after damaging cruciate knee ligaments.

The news is a massive blow for the Blades who currently sit just two points above the Championship relegation zone.

Morgan suffered the injury during last weekend's home defeat against Coventry City but the full extent of his problem has only emerged in the last few days.

Manager Gary Speed will now seek permission to re-enter the loan market with Manchester United's Ritchie De Laet a likely target.

The Belgian international, who can play anywhere across the defence, returned to Old Trafford last week after completing a month on loan at Bramall Lane.

However, the Blades will face competition for his signature from Championship rivals Leicester City.

"It's a big blow for Chris and us," said Speed last night. "Realistically, we are not going to see him in action again until pre-season training next July.

"The lads we have that can play in the central defender's role will miss his experience and spirit," he added. "But I'm sure they will do all in their power to make up for his absence."

Morgan, 32, joined the Blades from his hometown club Barnsley in 2004 and had signed a new three-year deal with the club only this summer. The Blades have collected just five points from the last seven games and host Ipswich Town this weekend.

Should Speed be unable to strengthen via the loan market, he will fall back on the services of centre-backs Nyron Nosworthy and Kyle Bartley who are currently on loan from Sunderland and Arsenal. Summer signing Johnny Ertl is another option along with youngster Matty Lowton.
