Viewed as a development capture, the Scot, 20, who signed a three-year deal at Oakwell after arriving on international deadline day from Celtic, will continue his education in Hertfordshire in the 2020-21 campaign.

Barnsley have inserted a recall clause into the deal which they are able to trigger in January if they wish.

On his move to Stevenage, Aitchison said: "I am delighted to get it over the line. It has been a chaotic 24 hours but I am just happy to be here now.

"I hope to come in, help the team, score some goals and help get us as high up the table as possible."

Commenting on the addition, Stevenage manager Alex Revell continued: "We are really pleased to bring Jack in and we are really excited to have him. He is someone that has experience at this level and is a very exciting talent. He adds real quality to us."

Aitchison, who has represented Scotland up to under-19 level, made three first-team appearances from the substitutes' bench for Celtic, making his debut in May 2016 when he became the youngest-ever player to represent the club in a competitive match at the age of just 16 years and 71 days.

A dream debut saw him score with his first touch in the match in the 7-0 drubbing of Motherwell, which made him the youngest-ever player to score a competitive goal for the Hoops in what was Ronny Deila's last game as manager.

But Aitchison - whose Celtic deal expired next summer - struggled for game time in his time at Parkhead since and was well down the pecking order.

Aitchison spent brief loan spells north of the border with Alloa and Dumbarton ahead of linking up League Two outfit Forest Green Rovers last term, where he scored seven goals in all competitions in a season-long loan.

The frontman has also scored 11 times in 19 appearances for the Scottish under-19 side.

On joining Barnsley - prior to moving out to Stevenage - Aitchison said: "I was excited to get down here and get the deal done. As soon as I knew there was a chance of coming to Barnsley, I didn't have to think twice.

"This is a good club where I know I'll be able to improve and develop my game."

Commenting on the deal to bring in the young attacker, Reds CEO Dane Murphy added: "Jack is a real talent and we are delighted to secure his services. He comes with real pedigree, having progressed through the Celtic academy set-up and is hungry to prove himself in England.

"We have no doubt that Jack a significant role at Oakwell in the near future, but right now, it is vital for his continued development that he plays regular football.

"Jack will spend a period of time in League Two, but we will monitor his progress closely."
