New Lease of Life for Market

TRADE is being given a boost at Scarborough’s Market Hall as new businesses move in to the site.

Over the last few weeks the historic St Helen’s Square hall has become the home of a number of new enterprises.

The Market Hall and Vaults are at the centre of an initiative by the Scarborough Council’s investment manager Nick Taylor, who is working to drive business in to the area.

The arrival of more traders in the hall has been seen as a huge boost to attracting new customers and future businesse.

One of the new enterprises is JJ’s Barbers.

Jill Ellwood, who has opened the business said: “There was a barbers in this unit for years and years but it has been left empty for a while now.

“I have been hairdressing in Scarborough for years and one day my husband just said to me why don’t I start my own business, and re-open the site in the market.

“I just thought why not, it is an ideal location which already has its own customer base.”

Mrs Ellwood refurbished the shop, renamed if JJ’s after her daughter Jasmine Jade, and says she is already seeing an increase in trade.

Another empty unit to reopen is the delicatessen which has been taken over by Shaun Holmes and Christine Slater who have opened Deli Delicious.

The pair previously owned CJA Menswear in the hall, but decided to swap trades and take on the deli.

Mr Holmes said: “Our clothes shop was right opposite the deli.

“It has been there for years, and then it just closed suddenly. We couldn’t believe the number of people who commented on how disappointed they were that it had closed so we thought why not take it over ourselves.

“We bought the ovens from the previous owners, and from day one when we opened it things have just been getting busier and busier.

“We are getting all our orders in for Christmas now too which is a big boost for us.

“We opened in response to customer demand, and there is a demand here. Things are really starting to pick up in the hall.”

And the couple’s previous business has already been taken over by Just Menswear, which is already planning to expand in the hall.

In the last week alone two further businesses have opening in the Market Hall; one selling baby wear and the other selling computer games.
