The Terriers are in a Championship relegation battle and until they know the outcome, planning on new deals is on hold.

But former Manchester United and Leicester City right-back Simpson has impressed since joining the Terriers in late September until the end of the season.

“It’s just about playing as many games as I can and playing well,” said the 33-year-old. “I’ve not had a pre-season, I’ve had a few niggles and there’s been times where I’ve been frustrated with myself because I know I can play better.

“I feel like I’m in a good place.

“I just want to help the team stay in this division and finish as high as we can.

“The lads are top class and I get on with the manager and Nicky (Cowley, his assistant). I’m sure at some point we’ll have a conversation. The lads and the manager know I’d love to stay.

“But we’ve got to stay in this league. If we can stay in the league after the position we were in after the first nine or 10 games, next season could be very interesting and good for the club.”

Manager Danny Cowley is just as keen on extending the relationship, praising the role Simpson has played behind the scenes.

“We like having him around,” said Cowley, who will wait on a scan on Jonathan Hogg’s knee before picking his team to host Charlton Athletic on Saturday. “He has helped us change the team and the changing room around.

“He is a really good bloke, an excellent one-v-one defender.

”Without doubt we would like to be able to keep him beyond this year, but we need to know which division we will be in. Once we have clarity we can sit down and start talking.”

Simpson has enjoyed passing on his experience to emerging talents such as Emile Smith Rowe and Chris Willock, on loan from Arsenal and Benfica respectively.

“They are two fantastic players,” said Simpson. “I just try to help them. Sometimes I think they forget I’m 33!

“When I was their age I had a lot of people helping me. Today I was telling them to get in the ice bath and the cryo (therapy chamber) because these little things will help them.”
