No standing still for Carlos Corberan at Huddersfield Town

After a difficult 18 months, Huddersfield Town finally found some much-needed stability in the second half of 2020 but coach Carlos Corberan has warned they cannot afford to stand still in 2021.

The Terriers took a big risk at the end of last season when they sacked a manager, Danny Cowley, who had saved them from Championship relegation because they wanted their football to move in a more expansive direction, with greater reliance on young players.

To be 13th in the table at this stage, 12 points above the relegation zone, suggests their bold move has paid off, and Corberan was recently rewarded with a contract extension until 2024.

He says it made no difference in terms of the support he has felt from the club, but outside recognition of the job he is doing will pose challenges his players must rise to.

“I felt very comfortable when I was talking with them to prepare the squad,” said Corberan of his relationship with the hierarchy at the club he joined in July. “Every time we analysed the situation, without them saying anything I was thinking I was in a project. We wanted to develop a style, to develop young players alongside experienced players, we wanted to create something together. It was why I moved to Huddersfield because I have the confidence that I could do this here.

“With my new contract, the situation has not changed. I have the same feeling, the same commitment and the same support I have had from the beginning.”

As others start to notice the success of Corberan’s very defined, high-intensity, passing-based brand of football, the coach’s challenge will be to keep his ideas one step ahead.

“Always in football when you start to do something well it’s harder to continue doing it because all the opponents analyse you and prepare for it,” he argued.

“In football you can never say now you have reached a level where you can beat any opponent. All the teams are growing and you never reach the point where you finish growing.”

Former captain Jon Worthington has been named the new B team coach replacing Danny Schofield, formally promoted to the first-team staff on Christmas Eve. George Danaher is the new Under-17 coach and Oran Thompson will assist both as Town keep their promotions in house.
