Norwich City 0-2 Hull City: Pearson delight at away-day success

Hull manager Nigel Pearson has called on his side to build on their morale-boosting 2-0 win at Norwich, which ended a sequence of 30 away games without victory.

The Tigers took the lead against the run of play in the 83rd minute when Robert Koren headed home after Andy Dawson's shot had deflected off Elliott Ward and Tom Cairney's stunning 20-yard free-kick wrapped up the points with two minutes left.

It was the first time the Tigers had tasted success on the road since beating Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage in the Premier League in March 2009, and Pearson hopes the result can end some of the negativity that had built up at the club during that miserable run.

"You can't underestimate how important a result this is for us," said Pearson. "The long run without an away win was causing anxiety within the group and was also affecting them psychologically while it was also stretching the patience of the fans a bit too, so it's great that we finally got that all-important victory. Now it's vital we kick on and build on this starting at Burnley on Tuesday night which will be another really tough game.

"Before today we had lost all three of our away games, letting in four, three and two goals while at home we have done reasonably well and haven't conceded at all. So you could see why everyone was so delighted at the final whistle – the staff, the players and of course our supporters. It's a really important result for everyone connected with the club."

Norwich enjoyed the best of the chances over the 90 minutes, and even Pearson felt some sympathy for the Canaries.

"To be perfectly honest Norwich will wonder how they have come away with nothing for their efforts," said Pearson. "This is a very difficult place to come to and they made it very difficult for us."
