Norwich City 1 Leeds United 1: Schmeichel fouled as Canaries equalised, claims Grayson

LEON BARNETT'S second-half header rescued a deserved point for Norwich as their npower Championship clash with Leeds ended all square.

Max Gradel fired Leeds into a 13th-minute lead as Simon Grayson's side enjoyed the better of the first half, but Canaries defender Barnett headed home David Fox's corner in the 65th minute to ensure a fourth straight league draw for his side.

Norwich dominated the second period and had the visitors holding on for a point at the end, but have now won only one of their last eight league matches, while Leeds have won three and drawn two of their games since successive home defeats last month left many questioning their play-off credentials.

Leeds manager Simon Grayson felt the Canaries' equaliser should not have stood.

He said: "We are disappointed with their goal because it was a blatant push by Chris Martin on Kasper Schmeichel. If Kasper hadn't been pushed he would have caught the ball and Norwich wouldn't have scored.

"It's frustrating, but I'm not here to criticise the referee. Sometimes they miss things like that and, to be fair to him, he played a good advantage in the lead-up to our goal.

"It was one of those games we could easily have won and easily have lost, so I suppose a draw was a fair enough result.

"We were under a bit of pressure towards the end of the game and they could have nicked it, but having said that we had a lot of the play in the first half and could have scored more than one.

"I thought it was a fantastic match between two good teams. We started really well, scored a good goal, and then I thought we just needed that extra bit of quality to get further ahead.

"In the second half they changed their shape, which I suppose is a compliment to us, and we were on the back foot for long periods. I thought our defending was first class, with players putting their bodies on the line to head clear and make blocks.

"Norwich have got a lot of good players but we came away with an excellent point and I would have settled for that before the game. It keeps our unbeaten run going but we're not getting carried away."

Leeds snatched a 13th-minute lead with their first meaningful attack.

Last week's hat-trick hero Luciano Becchio was brought down on the edge of the penalty area by Barnett, but Hertfordshire referee Mick Russell played the advantage and the ball broke for Gradel, who dispatched his third goal of the season from 12 yards, low into the bottom corner.

Leeds enjoyed a period of sustained pressure after breaking the deadlock, but both sides struggled to carve out any clear openings until Gradel was denied a second goal by Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy, who tipped over the Ivory Coast international's 25-yard shot. Gradel then fired in a fierce drive that was well held by Ruddy and saw another effort blocked by Norwich defender Elliott Ward shortly before half-time.

Norwich City: Ruddy, Russell Martin, Barnett, Ward, Lappin, McNamee (Jackson 62), Crofts, Fox, Surman (Hoolahan 63), Holt, Chris Martin. Unused substitutes: Rudd, Nelson, Johnson, Daley, Berthel Askou.
