Nottm Forest 2 Rotherham United 0: Assombalonga's double pushes Millers deeper into trouble at foot of the table

ROTHERHAM UNITED fell to defeat to a Nottingham Forest side whose backroom team were working to sign former Leeds United striker Ross McCormack.

With McCormack on the verge of making the switch from Aston Villa, Britt Assombalonga reminded everyone of his ability as he fired his side to this win.

Assombalonga’s second-half double at the City Ground earned just a second win in 11 Championship games for the home side.

It gave Forest extra reason to cheer after Nigel Clough turned down the chance to manage the club on Monday and caretaker Gary Brazil saw his side move eight points above the drop zone.

Rotherham’s three-season stay in the second tier is hanging by a thread as they are 12 points off safety and, with just 16 points all season, look certain to go down to League One.

Forest earned the lead five minutes after the restart when Richard Wood went through the back of Assombalonga, and the striker stroked home the penalty.

A quick break down the right then saw Jamie Ward put in a cross that Assombalonga slid home.
