Huddersfield adopted a 4-5-1 formation with Lee Novak given the lone striking role backed by flank due Gary Roberts and Danny Ward.

Oldham gave a debut to deadline day signings Shefki Kuqi, the former Owls striker released by Newcastle, and Norwich loan player Tom Adeyemi, who figured for Bradford last season.

Kuqi, 34, made a dream start to his Latics career, powerfully heading home from Bradley Diallo’s cross in the sixth minute.

Town were level 10 minutes later, stand-in captain Antony Kay volleying home off a post from an outswinging corner from Gary Roberts.

Both Town flank players were in form and Roberts went close to putting Town ahead when he stretched to meet a deep cross from Gary Naysmith but only succeeded in knocking the ball over the bar.

Former Finland international Kuqi, a one-time Blackburn team-mate of Oldham manager Paul Dickov, continued to make his muscular presence felt but neither side could break through again before half-time.

Chances came thick and fast after the break, Town goalkeeper Ian Bennett beating away a close-range drive from Reuben Reid, Lee Novak and Tommy Miller being denied by last-ditch tackles at the other end and Roberts being inches away from connecting with a cross from Jack Hunt.

Roberts was later replaced by fellow winger Donal McDermott as the pace continued to hot up.

Diallo was then shown a straight red for a reckless sliding challenge on Gobern and Dickov reacted by replacing Filipe Morais with David Mellor, Town sending on striker Alan Lee for the injured Gobern.

Lee’s first touch saw him swivel in the area and crack a shot against the bar.

Kuqi was also sacrificed for the last 10 minutes, being replaced by Matty Smith as Town forced the pace.

Despite fourminutes of stoppage time, Town failed to grab a winning goal but extended their unbeaten league run to 31 games.
