Out of the shadows: How Doukara returned to form at Leeds

Souleymane Doukara has dedicated his run of goals to Leeds United captain Sol Bamba and said his recent form is down to the willingness of Steve Evans to allow him to 'play free'.

Doukara revealed that words of support from Bamba were behind him celebrating by running towards Bamba and the bench after his recent finishes. The French striker has emerged from a peripheral period to score three in five games and lead the line in the absence of injured Chris Wood,

He said: “I’m happy to be scoring some goals and I’m enjoying playing. You just want to play your football and enjoy it. That’s it. I’m running to Sol because before the game he tells me ‘you will score, you will score’. That’s why I run to him, because he’s right. He motivates me to score.”

Doukara’s recent form came after Evans unexpectedly introduced him as a first-half substitute in a 3-2 win at Wolves before Christmas.

Earlier this week, Evans said that under previous coaches “this kid was discarded and told every day that he was rubbish”.

Doukara said: “They (Evans and assistant Paul Raynor) let me play free on the pitch. That’s why I play like this. At first I was on the bench or even not in the squad so that’s why people think I was in bad form. Now I’m on the pitch I can show what I can do.”
