Paul Warne wants Rotherham United to create the chances their football deserves

Paul Warne wants to see Rotherham United more creative and sharper in front of goal against Sheffield Wednesday as he looks to turn performances into points.

The Millers have picked up six from their opening seven matches back in the Championship, but Warne argues they have played much better than that.

The reason is clear – only four sides have scored fewer than their five goals and two of them are in the relegation zone.

“It's not the start we wanted – possibly the performances we wanted but not the points collection,” reflected the manager.

“We had that a little bit in the Championship last time where we probably didn't get the points we deserved. We've tried to change the way we've played a little bit but we probably haven't hand on heart created enough chances to get enough points. That's down to me and my staff but we'll try and rectify that.

“On Saturday I thought our performance was really good on the whole. It wasn't a 3-0 defeat (at leaders Reading), that's for sure.

“But then I look at the league and Cardiff have only collected three more than us and they're are big clubs. We're doing okay – fans can disagree with me, they normally do – but I think we could probably have a few more points on the board.

“We just need to create more chances to score more goals to win more games but our play, our attention to detail, the information they take on can't be questioned in my opinion but unfortunately I'm not judged by that, my job is judged on the points I'm collecting and at the moment we're not collecting as many as I think our performances deserve.”

Rotherham go into the game at New York Stadium with a pretty clean bill of health.

Goalkeeper Jamal Blackman is carrying an ankle injury, but it is not expected to stop the Chelsea loanee playing.

“He's going to be fine,” said Warne. “He felt better after Saturday's game than he did in midweek.

“If I had to count how many games I felt good in over my whole career, I would probably use one hand. 95 per cent of the time a player's carrying something.

“He's got a bit of a sore ankle but it's better than it was this time last week.

“He should be fine and if he isn't, it's the next man up (Viktor Johansson), so it's no drama but he looks like he's going to be fine.”
