Peterborough testing Bradford City's resolve with Â£500,00 move for Wyke

The 25-year-old, the Bantams’ top scorer last term with 15 league goals, is into the final year of his contract at Valley Parade.

Talks are understood to have taken place over a possible new deal, but City are also mindful of Wyke’s decreasing value the longer time passes without agreement being reached over an extension. He would be able to leave on a free transfer next summer.

Peterborough, who are set to sell £6m-rated top scorer Jack Marriott this summer, are in the market for a striker with director of football Barry Fry revealing a £1m bid for Mo Eisa had recently been rejected by Cheltenham Town.

City paid £250,000 to Carlisle United for Wyke in January last year and he has since netted 23 goals in 60 starts. Bolton Wanderers have also been tracking the striker, but Peterborough are the first to test Bradford’s resolve with a firm bid.

One forward in League One definitely on the move is Doncaster Rovers’ Liam Mandeville, who has joined Morecambe on a season-long loan deal.

The 21-year-old fell down the pecking order at the Keepmoat Stadium last season and was told he could leave by then manager Darren Ferguson in May.

Ferguson’s subsequent departure and replacement by Grant McCann has not changed Mandeville’s standing at Rovers and he must now look to relaunch his career in League Two.

Hull City are understood to have expressed an interest in Sheffield United goalkeeper George Long.

The 24-year-old, who spent last season on loan at AFC Wimbledon in League One, played under Tigers’ manager Nigel Adkins at Bramall Lane during the 2015-16 campaign.

Bradford Park Avenue will tomorrow pay tribute to former player Donald Bell, the only professional footballer to be awarded the Victoria Cross for heroism in the First World War.

A match is being held between the National League North club and the Yorkshire Regiment at Horsfall Stadium, kick-off 3pm, with the victors being awarded the Donald Bell Cup. Killed during the Battle of the Somme, Bell had played for Bradford before enlisting in 1915.
