Peterborough United 1 Hull City 1: Bruce disappointed by late leveller but feels point was just reward

Hull City manager Steve Bruce has confirmed the Championship promotion chasers are in talks to sign QPR striker DJ Campbell,

The 31-year-old, who will be out of contract at the end of the season, has made just four starts for the Premier League strugglers since joining from Blackpool in the summer of 2011 for a fee in the region of £1.2m.

Campbell enjoyed a three-month loan spell at Ipswich earlier this season, scoring 10 goals in 17 appearances, and has attracted their attentions as well as those of Cardiff and Hull.

Bruce said: “We’re talking to QPR. That’s all we are at the moment, talking to them.

“We hope we can try and resolve something (this week) if we possibly can and we’ll see what develops.

“I think the two chief executives are talking. Whether there’s been a bid lodged just yet or not I’m not quite sure where we’re up to.”

Peterborough United have now picked up four points against promotion-chasing Hull after a shock success at the KC Stadium back in December.

They could well have taken maximum points again had 17-year-old striker Jaanai Gordon-Hutton been able to mark his full Posh debut with a goal.

Gordon-Hutton out-muscled Alex Bruce to burst onto a long pass by McCann moments before Posh did equalise, but the product of the club’s youth system could only drag his shot narrowly wide.

Gordon-Hutton had earlier seen a low cut-back strike the base of a post while Hull’s German striker Nick Proschwitz failed to steer good headed chances on target in both halves, but this was a match sadly lacking goalmouth incident.

Hull boss Bruce was happy to head back north in possession of a share of the spoils.

Bruce said: “You’re always disappointed to be pegged back in the final few minutes of a match, but in all truth I don’t think we deserved anything more than a point.

“We gave away a soft penalty which I have absolutely no complaints about, but I can’t be too disappointed to be sat third in the league with only goal difference keeping us out of the automatic promotion places.”

He added: “Any footballer would have struggled to play on a slippy surface where the ball was jumping around all over the place. Only in England would we have got a game on in these conditions.”

McCann tucked away a 79th-minute spot-kick to earn a point after captain Tommy Rowe had been upended by James Chester.
