Police probe over Terry’s ‘racist abuse’

The Metropolitan Police has launched a formal investigation into allegations John Terry racially abused Anton Ferdinand after “assessing” a complaint from a member of the public.

England and Chelsea captain Terry has denied racially abusing QPR player Ferdinand insisting his own response was a denial.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were notified of an incident on Sunday October 23 involving alleged racial abuse. This is currently being investigated by officers from Hammersmith and Fulham.”

The Football Association are also investigating the claims Ferdinand was the subject of a racial slur by Terry during QPR’s 1-0 win over Chelsea.

Terry could lose the England captaincy for the second time in his career if he is found guilty.

Meanwhile, Ferdinand got racist abuse on Twitter for releasing a statement saying he had “strong feelings” on the matter and backed the FA’s inquiry.

Yesterday, he retweeted messages of support but also a racist jibe at him from someone who appeared to be a Chelsea fan.
