The 23-year-old watched his prospective new club’s 2-1 home loss to managerless Town at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday, with a fee having been agreed between the two clubs for the Northern Ireland international.

Speaking after the game, Royals chief Nigel Adkins said: “There’s a chance something could happen.

“He’s been linked with us, so we will have to wait and see how that one materialises.

“He’s not figured for them, so maybe there could be something in the offing.”

Meanwhile, Town have confirmed that caretaker-boss Mark Lillis will take charge of the club for a fourth match in Saturday’s home clash with Charlton.

Rotherham United forward Kieran Agard was last night reported to be in talks with League One side Bristol City after the Robins agreed a deal with the Millers.

Agard saw a move to Leeds United fall through last Friday after personal terms could not be agreed.

But Bristol City have remained keen on Agard, having chased the signature of the 24-year-old all summer.

Rotherham manager Steve Evans, speaking after the Millers’ loss to Watford, said: “There was a football club bidding quite aggressively, whether they have reached the numbers the chairman wants, I don’t know.

“Kieran couldn’t have played (on Tuesday) because he had a dead leg picked up on Saturday.

“But if they reach the numbers, then Kieran will get permission to talk and if he wants to go, he can go, everyone has a price,” added Evans.

The Millers are waiting on news of Paul Green’s foot injury after he was sent for scans amid fears he could have suffered a fracture in Tuesday’s game.

The former Leeds and Doncaster Rovers midfielder, who has made an impressive start to the campaign, was injured in the 2-0 loss by Watford after a challenge from veteran Keith Andrews, which Evans described as ‘X-rated’.

He said: “It’s an X-rated tackle, it’s a red card, it’s over the top, it’s late.

“We don’t know how bad it is, he’ll have it scanned.”
