Port Vale v Huddersfield Town: Town urged to recall their previous exploits

LEE CLARK has urged his Huddersfield Town players to use their memories of memorable Cup meetings with Premier League opposition over the past two years as an inspiration tonight.

Town travel to League Two Port Vale looking to earn a place in the Carling Cup second round.

Last season, Town met Everton at that stage of the competition while the year before brought a trip to Newcastle and a thrilling second-round tie that Clark’s men were unfortunate to lose 4-3.

Ahead of the trip to the Potteries to take on Micky Adams’s side, the Huddersfield chief said: “We have had some terrific ties in some magnificent arenas over the last couple of years such as Newcastle, Everton and Arsenal.

“All three games were fantastic experiences for everyone associated with the club. The players got to play in front of huge crowds against talented, world-class players.”

Town kicked off the 2010-11 campaign on Saturday with a disappointing draw at home to Bury and Clark is planning to utilise his squad’s considerable strength.

Clark, who will be without Scotland Under-21 striker Jordan Rhodes, added: “Not many players staked a claim for a starting spot so it gives all the lads who didn’t get a chance against Bury an opportunity.

“We want to win every game, there is no prioritising. Certainly, the league is the one we are all after but doing the business in the early rounds of the Cup competitions gets you lucrative games financially.

“It also gives our players and fans the opportunity to visit arenas they would not normally visit.”

Last six games: Port Vale DDLWLD, Huddersfield Town WDDDLD.

Last time: Port Vale 0 Huddersfield Town 1; November 28, 2009; FA Cup.

Referee: K Woolmer (Northamptonshire).
