The Terriers had sold around 18,000 tickets by close of business last night after slashing prices to just £5 for those purchasing before the day of the match.

Town have lost just once in eight games to banish any fears of relegation and Powell said: “A strong finish can create momentum for us for next year.

“We have a chance to get 59 points, which would be the most the club have had for a long time.

“I believe we are in a good place right now.

“It showed against Derby County (in last weekend’s thrilling 4-4 draw) what we are capable of against one of the best teams in the division and we want to carry that on in the final two games.”

Blackburn Rovers are tomorrow’s visitors and supporters have until the end of today to buy a cut-price ticket as Town look to eclipse the previous best crowd of 20,029 that saw the January defeat to Leeds United.

Powell added: “It is great that Dean (Hoyle, chairman) has done this initiative and for him to back it. I see it almost like a thank you to our fans.

“This season has been up and down at times but, at home, it has been good. Against the bigger sides we have performed, in the main, I really hope that we get the stadium packed out.”

Town travel to Blackpool on the final day, after which Powell hopes to put into operation the plans he has drawn up for the summer.

“We need to improve defensively and we have spoken about that in training this week because we have conceded far too many,” said the Londoner. “We have a tight squad and it has worked.”
