The transfer window opens on Thursday, with Powell targeting new recruits in several key areas, with his priorities being another centre-half and centre-forward, with his striking department down on numbers after Grant Holt’s return to Wigan.

The Town chief said: “There will be key areas I am looking to strengthen, without a doubt.

“I know I am going to have to bring players in who will improve us.”

Several fringe players could also leave for pastures new, including loan signing Radoslaw Majewski.

The Pole is on a season-long loan at Town, but has featured just once under Powell.

While he cannot return to parent club Nottingham Forest, the midfielder, out of contract in June, could move to another side on loan if that option transpires.

Powell added: “Every player who is contracted to Huddersfield Town has always got a chance because you never know what can happen.

“But it is tough for these guys (not playing); Radoslaw especially, who has really been on the periphery and we will have a look at it.

“I have had discussions with Dean (Hoyle), Ross (Wilson) and my staff and of course, we do have to move forward and sometimes, some players are maybe better off getting football elsewhere regularly.”

Town head into the new year in improved spirits with Sunday’s 2-1 win over Bolton moving them eight points away from the drop zone, with impressive midfielder Jonathan Hogg left to reflect on a much more rewarding afternoon after a Boxing Day to forget.

Hogg set up both the hosts’ goals, with Powell describing the Teessider’s display as ‘immense’ after he was laid low with illness and missed the 2-2 draw with Rotherham – with the Millers late fightback adding to his pains.

He said: “I am just over the moon that we got the three points. It was a big game after we shot ourselves in the foot at Rotherham.

“I was absolutely devastated not to be involved. I tried everything to be fit and it just was not happening.

“After going 1-0 down against Bolton, we thought: ‘It’s backs against the wall here’ again. The lads’ response was fantastic.

“The mentality that the gaffer has brought into us is that we don’t stop, we just keep going and that is the attitude he wants for us.”
