Powell still confident of bringing in necessary new faces

Powell, awaiting his first win as Town chief after collecting just a solitary point from his first three games in charge, is in the market for recruits in several areas to boost his squad numbers, which he feels are short.

His main target area is the forward department, with James Vaughan currently on the sidelines and Martin Paterson on the way back from injury and still short of competitive first-team action.

Thus far, Powell has not made much headway on the loan front and, for the time being, is likely to have to work with what has got.

But he is refusing to get downhearted and will persevere.

The Londoner, whose side welcome Millwall tomorrow – seeking to end their long wait for a home win which stretches back to March 1 – said: “I know I can only loan at the minute, but I do feel we are light in numbers and even with the good players we have, I want us to get better and do better.

“But again, it is not just us looking for other players, but other clubs and you are fighting against those are well.

“It is not easy, but we are trying to do that.

Specifically on his quest for a new striker, he added: “It is no secret that I feel we are light in the striking area.

“I have got to recognise we have one or two players coming back, as it is easy saying we need strikers because we have lost James Vaughan.

“Martin Paterson is coming back and will be looking to try and impress me. But I do feel we may need something up there; of the right type.

“Yet it has got to be the right person for this club and I may also have bolster numbers in one or two other areas as well.

“It’s looking at how can get us better; not just bringing in a player because we need it. It must nbe someone who can boost and improve.

“I am looking everywhere really. But the centre forward area is vital for us.

“We have not really gone doen the road yet of really being close in making calls. We are finding out that other clubs are in for them and then other clubs don’t want to let them go.

“It is kind of a constant battle, but I am ready to keep doing that and eventally you will get players in and you want them to make a difference.”
