Preston North End v Barnsley: Loan arrivals could start for Tykes at Deepdale

BARNSLEY manager Mark Robins made a double deadline day swoop for Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez and West Bromwich Albion midfielder Filipe Teixeira.

Both players have joined the Tykes on a month's loan and could make debuts in tonight's Championship trip to Preston North End.

Rodriguez, 20, has only recently returned to action after spending four months on the sidelines with a broken ankle and has been limited to two Carling Cup appearances this season.

Barnsley manager Mark Robins, however, is adamant that the Burnley-born striker still has a big future in the game.

"He will undoubtedly be a Premier League player long term," said Robins. "He has got a bit of pace, he is decent in the air, a good touch, clever, and he is a decent finisher. We need some help up front and we desperately need something different."

Teixeira, 29, is in the final year of his contract with Albion and has only started one game – against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup – in the last three months.

Born in France but a Portuguese national, Texeira cost the Baggies 600,000 three years ago from Portuguese side Academica de Coimbra.

Robins, who was hugely disappointed with his side's weekend defeat at Reading, said: "He is a playmaker, someone who unlocks doors and finds a pass. Again, I feel we need something a little different to what we have got."

With four defeats in the last five games, the Tykes are seeking a return to winning ways at Deepdale. Robins's arrival sparked a swift improvement in results before Christmas but performances have dipped over the last three months.

Robins failed in a bid to sign Preston duo Chris Sedgwick and Stephen Elliott last week but neither player is likely to be involved tonight.

Possible departures for other players who are surplus-to-requirements to Oakwell failed to materialise. Jamaican international Jamal Campbell-Ryce was sold to Bristol City last week.

Preston manager Darren Ferguson failed in a bid yesterday to sign midfielder Martin Woods from Doncaster Rovers. Ferguson, however, was set to complete a deal for Blackburn Rovers winger Keith Treacey who started the season on loan at Sheffield United.

The Tykes are currently eight points adrift of the play-off zone and seven points clear of the relegation zone.

With 20 games to play, the club's season is still capable of going one of two ways. Preston are two points better off than Barnsley and are looking for a third consecutive victory under Ferguson.
