The Terriers, who welcome back top scorer Elias Kachunga from injury, will be looking to build a lead to take to Hillsborough for next week’s return leg.

With this being the closest Huddersfield have been to the top flight since being relegated in 1972, the stakes are high and Wagner believes the fans can play a big role.

“We have done a job in the league season,” said the club’s head coach at today’s media briefing. “Now we have to do another job in a different competition. We are totally happy and excited to be involved.

“Everyone knows this club has waited 45 years for this. It is a long time for a moment like this, to have the chance of going into the final and then the Premier League.

“This has to be the best atmosphere in 45 years as well. We have to make sure we take this energy - the best in 45 years at a Huddersfield Town stadium - and transform it into energy on the grass.

“We all have to play our role. The supporters have been great over the whole season. Now, they have to be greater.”

Kachunga’s return after a four-game absence is a major boost for Town, who will be without suspended goalkeeper Danny Ward following last weekend’s red card against Cardiff City.

Wagner has given the Huddersfield crowd constant praise throughout the season

Wagner added: “Joel (Coleman) is totally ready. He has shown that over the full season. And in the last two games, the Birmingham one and Cardiff when he came off the bench.

“I have no worries about anything. We are happy for him, that he is involved in another proper match.

“This is another important one for him and us, which we will play together. I would love to have the decision whether to drop him or not after he over-performed and gave us a great result.”

As for Kachunga, Wagner added: “He has been back in training since yesterday. He has been involved 100 per cent with our training routines.

“All the players have come back to training without issues, apart from the long-term injuries - Kasey Palmer, Jon Gorenc Stankovic and Philip Billing.”
